ABR, TIJ, Carousel Kings, I The Breather, Sirens & Sailors

Posted by Carson Slovak on Jul.12, 2013

Lots of awesome things happening at Atrium the past few months.

First off, the new August Burns Red album, Rescue and Restore, that Grant and I produced, engineered and mixed was released to overwhelming critical praise, selling over 26,000 copies in its first week of release and landing in the Top Ten of the Billboard 200. We are incredibly proud of this album and it represents a landmark moment for us as producers. We’d like to congratulate the band on this accomplishment and thank them for letting us be a part of what I believe is their best album yet. ABR is currently co-headlining Warped Tour 2013 and have just released their first music video for the song “Fault Line”, which you can view below.

Atrium alumni and longtime pals Texas In July paid us a visit back in April to track three brand new songs for the special deluxe edition rerelease of their latest, self-titled album on Equal Vision Records, right in time for their run on Warped Tour. Grant and I had a blast producing these new songs, one of which, titled “Time Lapse” you can check out below.

In other Texas In July news, I recently had the opportunity to completely remix and remaster their first few releases for a special re-issue on CI Records. Titled Reflections, the release includes the band’s first EP, Salt of the Earth, their first full-length, I Am, their single, “Uncivilized” and a b-side called “Fair Fight”, all together on one CD, remixed / remastered with a new running order and artwork. I originally recorded all of this material years ago at my old studio and I’m beyond excited that I had a chance to revisit the mixes after learning so much since then and make them sound way better. This is how these songs were always supposed to sound. You can pick up the release directly from CI Records right HERE and you can listen to one of the tracks below.

We also recently finished up a new full-length for Lancaster, PA pop-punk band Carousel Kings. This album is fantastic, all the way through. Every song is incredibly catchy with tons of youthful pop-punk energy while also managing to implement thoughtful and mature songwriting. We even got to track a live chainsaw for the album, a first for Grant and I. CK has been killing it on tour since we finished the album, which is expected to be released by the end of summer on CI Records.

We spent about two weeks in June producing a new full-length for I The Breather (Sumerian Records). Grant, Ricky Armellino and I had a lot of fun with this one since we had the opportunity to start from the ground up and have a hand in the writing process for the album. Beginning with only a few rough ideas, we managed to put together a great batch of songs with the band. We’re excited for the dudes to come back in for a few weeks at the end of the summer to finish tracking. The album is already shaping up to be a massive progression in the band’s sound and we couldn’t be more stoked to be a part of it.

Grant and I spent the last three weeks working on a new full-length from Rochester, NY band Sirens & Sailors, who recently signed a record deal with Artery Recordings / Razor & Tie. We tracked a few songs for these guys back in January and we were stoked to have them back for a full album. S&S is easily one of the funnest group of guys to work with. Not only are they unbelievably tight at all of their instruments, they are absolutely hysterical to be around and hang out with. I honestly have no idea how we even managed to get anything done considering the fact that I probably spent the majority of the three weeks laughing. Their new album is amazing. Not a dull moment on it. Super heavy, melodic, technical and catchy. We just finished the first rough mix but for now you can check out one of the older songs we tracked a while ago, a crowd-favorite called “Go For The Throat”:

Lastly, we’ve had the good fortune to work on a number of other shorter projects between the longer ones, including killer singles and EPs from Cyperna, The Forest Brothers, This or the Apocalypse, X-Hunters, Ex-Votos, Arcane Haven, Aline, Colored Vinyl, Amateur Theory, Empire Before All and Black Crown Initiate. We’d also like to congratulate our great friends in Affiance on recently completing a full-US tour with Killswitch Engage. And last but not least, check out the sweet new music video for “The Witching Hour Part II” that our buddies My Heart To Fear just released off their SolidState Records debut that Grant and I produced:

Until next time! – Carson

Atrium is once again sponsoring the annual Launch Music Conference in Lancaster, PA today through Sunday. We will be hanging out at our booth during the trade show all day tomorrow (Friday) and Saturday so come by and say hello! Grant and I will also be featured as speakers on an industry discussion panel about audio production on Saturday at 3:15pm at the Lancaster Convention Center. We’ll have a bunch of cool free handouts available at the booth, including Atrium stickers, die-cut brochures and Dropcards with an entirely new music selection from artists we’ve produced over the past year. We’ll also have our first ever Atrium t-shirts available to buy for $10. Supplies are very limited so stop by the booth as soon as possible if you’re in the market for one.

I’d also like to thank Neighbor Kid Productions for putting together an awesome video promo that will be playing at our table. He’s super easy to work with and does a great job, so if you’re looking for an animated lyric video, hit him up!

Huge Belated 2013 Update

Posted by Carson Slovak on Feb.12, 2013

Lots of cool stuff happening at the studio lately. We closed last year out and began 2013 with some awesome projects. New singles for I, The Breather and Sirens & Sailors, new EPs for Benchpress, One Year Later, Carousel Kings, and Royal/Revise and new full-length albums for Gladiators, From Under The Willow, Last In Line, A Scent Like Wolves, The Road To Milestone and Bullet Method. All really cool bands and we couldn’t be more stoked on these recordings.

We’d like to congratulate our pals in Rivers of Nihil for signing to Metal Blade records. We recently produced some new tracks for them, one of which they have an awesome music video for, which you can check out below.

We spent most of December working with The Last Ten Seconds of Life on their newest record, InVivo[ExVivo]. Grant and I have worked with TLTSOL on pretty much all of their releases so we were pumped to have them back to the studio. This album is by far their heaviest and most inspired, expanding the boundaries of its influences and venturing into new sonic territory. Below is the lyric video for their first single, “Numbskull.”

Grant and I just finished producing a new full-length for our good friends in My Heart To Fear, who recently signed to SolidState Records. I’ve known these guys since I recorded their EP A Ship Built To Sink and they’ve worked incredibly hard and grown significantly as a band over the years. Grant and I put a ton of effort into this new album and we’re all super proud of it. It’s incredibly dynamic, heavy and very memorable. We’re currently in the mixing phase and we can’t wait for it to be released. Here’s one of their video updates from the studio, featuring Grant drunk eating Thai food and me sober eating a whole pork chop on a fork.

We’re beyond stoked to announce that Grant and I will be producing the new full-length from our close friends and heavy metal titans, August Burns Red. We had an absolute blast producing the band’s Christmas album last year so the next six weeks will be pretty freaking sweet. The new material that they’ve been writing is amazing and the pre-production we’ve done is already ridiculously tight. Guitarist JB Brubaker had the following to say about the upcoming record:

“This new record will push the boundaries of our genre more than we ever have before. We set out to write a record where every song stands out from the last. There is a lot of ground covered here and a ton of meat to this album. It’s full of odd metered rhythms and breakdowns, unexpected twists and turns, and some of our most technical riffing to date. Each of us have parts that make our heads spin and we have had to practice like crazy to get some of this stuff together. I know we always say this, but this will be our most ambitious album yet.”

Quite simply, this album is going to slay. Here’s a cool video of Matt jamming during the Sleddin’ Hill session last year.

Speaking of ABR, Grant will be participating in a cool drumming event presented by Greiner & Kilmer Customs on March 23. The even will feature workshops, drum clinics, a drum-off judged by Grant, Matt Greiner of August Burns Red and Adam Gray of Texas In July, and a special three-man drum solo performed by Grant, Matt and Adam. You can get your tickets now at

We’re looking forward to the next few months that will include new full-length albums for Carousel Kings, Sirens & Sailors and few others yet to be announced. Stay tuned and thanks for reading. – Carson

ABR Christmas album / Affiance full-length

Posted by Carson Slovak on Aug.31, 2012

It’s been busier than ever over the last few months here at the studio. First order of business: The new holiday album by our good pals August Burns Red, completely recorded, produced and mixed at Atrium by Grant and me. “ABR Presents: Sleddin’ Hill, A Holiday Album” is an incredibly dynamic album full of eclectic instrumentation and song arrangements. The 13 tracks include all four of ABR’s past Christmas singles (remixed / enhanced) as well as two new original songs alongside the band’s versions of other holiday classics like Oh Holy Night, Frosty the Snowman, Jingle Bells and Sleigh Ride. This album was a very exciting and challenging project for us. A 50-person vocal choir, cello, violin, tuba, trombone, piano, ukelele, banjo, acoustic and a variety of percussive elements were just a few of the supplemental instruments we tracked completely for real and live. This album was a pretty massive undertaking and we couldn’t be more proud of how it turned out. The first original single from the album was just released today and can be streamed below. The effort will be in stores on October 9th via Solid State Records and you can order it by clicking here.

Another project we’re super excited about is the upcoming full-length for Ohio’s Affiance, due out in November on Bullet Tooth Records. After producing two singles for the band back in March, Grant and I were given the opportunity to work with them on their new album. These dudes are some of the best musicians we’ve recorded and the new album is incredible, start to finish. They’ve also instantly become great friends and Grant and I had an absolute blast throughout the recording process. We already miss them sleeping in the studio, breaking our sink and providing a healthy dose of full-frontal male nudity everyday. The album is currently in the mixing stage and an official announcement with details for the release will be made soon. For now, you can check out one of the singles we did back in March titled “You Will Be Replaced,” which recently ranked in the top 5 on the iTunes Metal Charts.

That’s all for now. Check back soon and have a great Labor Day! – Carson

LAUNCH 2012 / New DW Kit / Current Projects

Posted by Carson Slovak on Apr.25, 2012

This year’s Launch Music Conference is right around the corner and, as usual, Atrium is an official sponsor. We’ll be hanging out at the trade show in the Lancaster Convention Center all day Friday and Saturday so come by our booth and say hello. We also just got some cool new diagonal-cut brochures to hand out (pictured below), as well as some nifty bumper stickers and Dropcards with new music, which will be available for free at our trade show booth. If you haven’t registered for the conference yet, do so here and check out the official Event Guide while you’re at it. You can also check out an online schedule of almost 20 bands that have all recorded at Atrium and are all playing Launch this weekend on the righthand sidebar or click here for the schedule page. Lastly, both Grant McFarland and I will be guest speakers on two of the industry panel discussions: “How To Prepare For Your Release” (Grant), Friday, April 27 @ 11am and “How Do I Get Signed” (Carson), Saturday, April 28 @ 1pm.

In other news, our brand new DW Collector’s Series custom-built drum kit just arrived yesterday and we’re beyond excited about it. We have a few kits at the studio but this one is the “tits” so-to-speak. Maple shells with African ChenChen veneer, 22″x18″ kick, 10″x8″ rack tom, 12″x9″ rack tom and 16″x14″ floor tom. It will be available for studio use by any of our clients at no additional charge. Check it out:

We’ve been hitting it non-stop since January, completing a number of full-lengths, EPs and singles for (in no particular order) Sacred Serenity, Divine Air, I Surround, Ex-Votos, Delorian Conquest, Secret Eyes, The May Season, The Last Ten Seconds of Life, Benchpress, The Road To Milestone, Ace Augustine, James Wolpert, Conspiracy, Fisthammer, Samsara, Scout’s Honor, From These Wounds, YGATM, Lies of a Murderer, Forgive Yesterday and My Soul For Glory. We just wrapped up Atlantic Avenue’s new full-length (and Eulogy Records debut), two new singles for Ohio’s Affiance (Bullet Tooth Records), mastering for Throw The Fight’s John Feldmann-produced full-length (also Bullet Tooth) and a new recording for the mighty August Burns Red (details forthcoming). We’re currently in the studio with The Teeth (Rock Paper Records) recording their new full-length, which is turning out awesome so far. Forthcoming over the next few months we’ll be working with our friends in Paper Castle, Goodbye Neveah, The Riot, Eye Fur & Tooth, A Million Drones, A Scent Like Wolves, Cyperna and more.
