Frequently Asked Questions
Below is a list of frequently asked questions. If you have an inquiry that isn’t addressed here, please contact us.
What is your process for tracking and editing?
Tracking sessions entail the actual recording of performances and comprise the majority of time you’ll spend in the studio. We pride ourselves on having the capacity to adapt to the specific artist’s vibe and adjust our methods accordingly, but we do have some overall standards of practice when it comes to tracking and editing. A typical tracking session will begin with drum tracking / editing, followed by guitar and bass tracking / editing and finished with vocal tracking.
What is your process for mixing and mastering?
We generally prefer to schedule mixing and/ or mastering sessions a few days after the last tracking session. Spending a few days away from the rough mix will let your ears reset and give you an opportunity to take detailed notes on what you think should change. The engineer mixing your project will also take notes on the rough mix. Please bring your finalized notes to the scheduled mixing session.
Can you make a mediocre performance sound good?
Please be fully prepared for the recording session prior to booking it. While our engineers have extensive editing experience, it’s very difficult to repair a poor performance. For the sake of saving you time and money, please make sure to have your performances solid before attempting to record them.
How should I prepare for recording?
In order to properly prepare for recording, we recommend replacing all top drum heads and guitar/ bass strings. This is an extremely important part of finding great tones. If you need the studio to provide you with drum heads, strings, etc. we can do so at an additional cost. Please have all stringed instruments professionally set up for intonation and make sure any gear you bring is in proper working order. Most importantly (as mentioned above), practice the material until you’re 100% confident with it.
Can I invite a crew of my young hoodlum friends to the studio to chill?
We’re pretty laid-back guys and don’t mind if one or two other people come hang out, but we prefer to keep it to a minimum and have only the band members be present. We’ve found in the past that it’s hard to focus when there are other people in the room causing a distraction and it ultimately wastes time and money. Please see the Studio Policies section for more information.
